WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND
Weymouth and Portland are beautiful and very accessible ports, often used as landing or jumping off points for voyages across wide Lyme Bay. They can both be safely entered in any weather, all states of tide and by day or night.
Weymouth is a lovely Dorset seaside town with a public quay, a river marina above the lifting bridge, a long crescent-shaped sandy beach and bars and restaurants of every type. Portland boasts a vast and well-protected ex-naval harbour, a modern marina, boat yards and the Olympic dinghy sailing academy.
The ten miles of shore east from Weymouth are known locally as The Jurassic Coast because of the huge numbers of dinosaur fossils and footprints being uncovered by slow cliff erosion. Along this stretch of coast are the iconic Durdle Door limestone arch, the unmissable Lulworth Cove and the eerie abandoned village of Tyneham, evacuated during WWII in 1943.
Stock up at the supermarkets in Weymouth town centre or browse the many traditional independent shops along the quaint streets and alleys behind the old harbour.
The famous Portland Bill lighthouse, geographically significant Chesil Beach and charming Abbotsbury village, swannery and abbey remains are great places to visit close by.
